Pigment Definitions and Technical Concepts

A pigment is the material component in paint that provides the color.

It is defined by its physical properties. The one that most people is familiar with, its the one above, its capability to give color to the media in which it is dispersed. We call this substance a binder. Its function is to hold together the pigment particles, and to make them adhesive to the painting substrate, and consist of three particular kinds: water-based, emulsions, and lipid-based.

The second defining quality of a pigment, is what differentiates it from a dye, which confers a substrate with color, but unlike pigments, a dye is totally soluble in its agluttinant, which tend to be volatile solvents: like water, Isopropyl Alcohol, mineral spirits, or aromatic organic compounds like Toluene. This physical property of being unable to dissolve in its agglutinant, is what conveys the pigments with their painting quality, because without it, we would be left just with a media and no body. This determining condition allows the pigments to create a suspension instead of a solution.

The third defining property is particle size. Although pre-industrial pigments featured less standardization and often included larger particles, a meaningful average size can still be established. The primary distinction from modern pigments lies not in the absolute measurement, but in the greater random variation in their particle dimensions. The standard range is established as 0.3 to 50 micrometers, though exceptions are frequent. For instance, transparent iron oxide pigments possess a finer granularity that confers translucency, by allowing light to pass across, while also providing enhanced UV protection through more efficient absorption of ultraviolet radiation. In contrast, coarse pigments may exceed 60 micrometers, even though, by today’s standards, that particle size is often classified as sediment.

Pigment Categories

Pigments can be arranged into a wide variety of categories. Their classification depends primarily on which parameters are being analyzed, according to the intended use. Often these classifications overlap, as one variable does not exclude another. In some cases, they relate in a parent-child hierarchy; for example, a natural pigment may be either organic or inorganic. However, since not all organic pigments are natural, they must be considered distinct sibling classes to avoid confusion. This situation does not present a complication once the basis for each division is understood, leading to a more practical application of the knowledge.
